Audi & VW Carbon Cleaning (Intake Valve De-Carbonization) in San Francisco

VAS Motor Works performs intake valve de-carbonization — carbon cleaning — on Audi and Volkswagen direct-injection engines in San Francisco. It is one of our specialities, and it is work most general repair shops will not take on. We are at 3121 17th St in the Mission District.

Why direct-injection engines build up carbon

On an older port-injected engine, fuel sprays onto the back of the intake valve and continuously washes it clean. On a direct-injection engine — Audi FSI and TFSI, Volkswagen TSI — fuel is injected straight into the cylinder, so nothing ever washes the valve. Oil vapour drawn through the crankcase ventilation system bakes onto the hot valve instead, and over tens of thousands of miles it builds into a hard carbon deposit that restricts airflow.

Symptoms of carbon buildup

  • Rough idle, particularly when cold
  • Misfires and stored misfire codes on one or more cylinders
  • Hesitation or stumble under light acceleration
  • Noticeable loss of power and slower throttle response
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • A check engine light that returns after coils and plugs have already been replaced
  • Harder cold starts

A frequent story we hear: the car has had new spark plugs and ignition coils fitted elsewhere, and it still misfires. That is very often carbon.

How we clean the valves

There is no shortcut that works. Fuel additives and spray-in cleaners never reach the back of the intake valve on a direct-injection engine, because fuel does not pass over it. The deposits have to be removed mechanically.

  1. We confirm carbon is actually the cause — fault codes, live data and, where needed, a borescope look at the valves.
  2. The intake manifold is removed to expose the intake ports and valves.
  3. The deposits are removed by media blasting with walnut shell, which strips hardened carbon without damaging the valve or the port.
  4. Ports and valves are cleaned out thoroughly, new gaskets are fitted, and the manifold is reinstalled.
  5. We road test and verify the misfire and idle quality are resolved.

How often it is needed

It varies with engine, driving style and oil service history. Short city trips and extended oil intervals build deposits faster. Many Audi and VW owners in San Francisco need it somewhere in the range of 60,000 to 100,000 miles — and symptoms, not mileage, are the real trigger. If your direct-injection Audi or VW idles rough or misfires and the ignition system has already been replaced, it is worth looking at the valves.
