If the check engine light is on in your Audi, VAS Motor Works in San Francisco will find out why before anything gets replaced. We are a factory-trained, family-owned Audi and Volkswagen specialist at 3121 17th St in the Mission District, and check engine light diagnosis is one of the jobs our customers mention most in our Google reviews.
What the check engine light actually means
The light means the engine control module has stored one or more fault codes. It does not tell you which part has failed. A code such as a lean running condition or a random misfire can be caused by half a dozen different faults, which is why a code reader alone is not a diagnosis. The light steady versus flashing matters too: a flashing check engine light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, and the car should not be driven far.
Common causes on Audi engines
- Carbon buildup on the intake valves — very common on FSI and TFSI direct-injection engines, showing up as misfire codes, rough idle and lost power
- Failed ignition coils or spark plugs causing single or multiple cylinder misfires
- Vacuum and boost leaks — PCV valves, intake manifold gaskets, diverter valves and charge pipes, often logged as a lean mixture fault
- Thermostat and coolant temperature faults on 2.0T and 3.0T engines
- Oxygen sensor and catalytic converter efficiency codes
- Timing chain stretch or tensioner wear, which logs camshaft and crankshaft correlation faults
- Evaporative emissions leaks — sometimes as simple as a failed purge valve or a loose fuel cap
- Fuel system faults — high-pressure fuel pump, injectors or low rail pressure
How we diagnose it
- We read all stored and pending codes with factory-level diagnostic equipment, across every module — not just the engine.
- We review live data and freeze-frame data to see the conditions when the fault was recorded.
- We test the suspected component or circuit directly — smoke testing for leaks, compression and leak-down testing for misfires, electrical testing for sensor and wiring faults.
- We confirm the root cause, then quote the repair before any work starts.
- After the repair we clear the codes and road test to verify the fault does not return.
Do not just clear the code
Clearing the light without fixing the cause hides the problem and erases the freeze-frame data that makes diagnosis faster. It also resets your readiness monitors, which will fail a smog check. If your light is on, have it diagnosed properly.
